Newby McNewberson here

Postby mojogil » Fri Feb 19, 2010 1:34 am

Here's the thing, I mix a country rock band here in the US. I've never done anything midi and I don't understand anything about it. I'm an audio guy only.... until now. But I need help, bad.
I am in the process of sequencing our show. So far I have click tracks only. I bought a launchpad with the dream of triggering my sequences. I use SAW Studio. I know a guy who mixes a very well known country star and he showed me their setup. He has a 60 button box that he made himself and the drummer pushes the button for the song they want to play and it triggers SAW Studio. He has seven hours of backing tracks and such recorded and ready to roll. I'm sure the launchpad can do what I want it to do but I don't know where to start. Can anyone here offer any advice on how to get started.
Thanks in advance,
Gil

Hi Mojogil and welcome to the forums

What you want to do is quite easy to set up with a launchpad and Ableton Live. I've never heard of SAW studio so I can't help you there. The launchpad is made for Ableton Live but does work with other programs it just requires a bit of messing around to get it to work.

Heres how I would do with Ableton Live and the Launchpad.

1. Set up Ableton Live to have an audio track and a midi track.

2. The audio track is for the backing tracks and the midi is for the click track.

Ableton Live works like a grid. Clips going down (in your case backing tracks) and scenes going across. Each horzontal line i.e. the scene will hold a backing track and acompaning click track.

3. When you set up a scene for a backing track set the launch tempo to the bpm of the backing track.

4. Add a new scene for each backing track and repeat step 3.

5. Now for the click. You could use Ableton Lives built in click or download and use metrobus on the a midi track. The click tempo will automactically change with the bpm of the backing track if you've done step 3 right.

Now the launchpad comes in. The launchpad can then be used to trigger each scene with the backing track in it. It will light up green to show the scene is playing. This would be easy for the drummer to use the launchpad for changing the scenes.

You could also automate the scenes so they play back to back without the need for a launchpad.

Anything you don't get just ask and I'll help.
