Novation are giving away a free Max for Live patch that turns your Launchpad into a fully fledged step sequencer.
Unlike normal sequencers this one has been coded to so the steps work diagonally instead of chromatically. Other options include changing the degree of the scale & the tonal center. According to Novation, if you set this up properly any note you trigger in the sequence will be harmonically correct with the rest of the song.
You can use the step sequencer with any instrument that can load into live, be it drum machine, sampler, synth or keyboard emulator. The app communicates directly with the launchpad and uses the user mode 2 as the sequencer interface meaning you can still control live with the other modes on the launchpad.
The pitch, velocity and length of notes can be edited using the buttons on the right hand side of the launchpad. You can also use a parameter which adds a bit of randomness to your sequences by increasing or decreasing the chance that a particular note or parameter setting with be used.
Of course to use this app you have to have Ableton Live 8.1 & Max for Live installed. The app is still in beta but if you’ve got a max/msp liecence you can always edit it for your own purposes.
